Ferdinand Friedrich Reuss first reported electro-osmotic flow in 1807 in an unpublished lecture before the Physical-Medical Society of Moscow. He showed that water could flow through a clay plug by applying an electric voltage. The English chemist Robert Porrett Jr. also discovered electro-osmosis independently in 1814. Electro-osmosis to control rising damp became a practical application much later.

The Lectros rising damp control system is based on our understanding of electromagnetic fields. It’s fascinating to see how water (H₂O), as a polar molecule, showcases such remarkable properties and behaviours that truly enhance our understanding of its importance! Understanding this characteristic is crucial for grasping the essential role water plays in our world. They use electro-osmosis to reverse the rising damp process using an electromagnetic field. They do this by fitting a titanium cable with platinum anodes into the masonry walls. A 6 V DC transformer supplies a small current to the titanium cable. A copper grounding rod is installed and connected to the Lectros transformer. This setup creates a weak electromagnetic field which repels the water in the wall. Thus, electro-osmosis controls the rising dampness.
